UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon isn’t considering appointing a new negotiator for Kosovo, according to UN headquarters in New York. “Those rumors are not true. For the moment, there are no plans to appoint a new special negotiator,” said Ban’s spokesman Brendan Varma, after speculation in the media that the UN secretary-general would appoint Jean-Marie Guehenno as the new negotiator between Belgrade and Pristina. UN: No plans for new Kosovo negotiator “Guehenno might soon come to the region, but as head of UN peacekeeping operations, not as a special envoy or new negotiator,” said Varma. Following Ban’s visit to Moscow last week, The Times reported that he could soon appoint a negotiator with the task of re-starting negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina, stating that the man in question could very well be Guehenno, whose mandate as UN under-secretary for peacekeeping operations ends soon. “I think there has been a mix-up up with some older reports from the Slovenian STA news agency,” said Varma, alluding to stories in late March claiming that Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel had said that Slovenia, as EU president, would prepare a statement concerning the Western Balkans that would contain “some new ideas.”
