Speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol were the causes of a car crash in Vojvodina over the weekend. The traffic accident in the town of Vrbas, that killed a teenager and four others in their twenties, all passengers in a car, happened Saturday. Speeding, alcohol, killed 5 in Vrbas Monday evening, Vrbas Municipal Court Investigative Judge Sreca Vucenov revealed that the driver, identified as 26-year-old Aleksandar Hornjak, had 1.73 permilles of blood alcohol at the time of the fatal crash. Serbian regulation allows a maximum of 0.5 permilles. "Obviously, the primary causes of the accident are excessive speed, unadjusted to the conditions of the road, and the fact the driver was drunk. The exact speed at which the vehicle was traveling has not been calculated, because no brake marks were found on the road," the judge explained. The accident happened when Hornjak tried to avoid hitting a parked car, lost control of the vehicle, switched lanes, and collided head-on with a bus. The bus also slid off the road because of the force of crash, but luckily the driver and the passengers escaped unharmed. Yesterday, the victims were buried in their hometown, which declared a day of mourning, while the town hall decided to help their families with RSD 50,000 each.
