Dragan Sutanovac says that by forming a government, the DS maintained relations with the EU and averted violence in Kosovo. “I am convinced that we prevented relations with the EU being broken off, as well as the obvious scenario of conflict breaking out in Kosovo and escalating throughout the region, turning Kosovo into Beirut with unthinkable repercussions,” the defense minister and vice president of the Democratic Party (DS) told daily Vecernje Novosti. DS "averted violence in Kosovo" Asked whether he was alluding to the fact that the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) and New Serbia (NS) had supported military intervention, Sutanovac said that “such ideas existed.” “Someone wanted to help the Serbs in Kosovo by giving them weapons and ammunition,” Sutanovac claimed. He said that he had never accused Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica or Kosovo Minister Slobodan Samardzic of organizing the events in Kosovska Mitrovica, but that he “remains certain that those events were orchestrated from Belgrade.” Sutanovac repeated that he did blame the DSS-NS for the attacks on foreign embassies in Belgrade on February 21, following Kosovo’s unilateral independence declaration. “I am calling on government Secretary-General Dejan Mihajlov to publish the transcript of the February 21 cabinet meeting, where Infrastructure Minister Velimir Ilic announced what would be happening that afternoon in Belgrade, mentioning attacks on the American embassy, B92 and [Liberal Democratic Party leader] Cedomir Jovanovic", said the defense minister. He denied accusations by Kostunica that the DS was not sincere in its fight for Kosovo, and said that the DSS-NS were using the issue to get “a few more votes off the back of citizens’ emotions.” Sutanovac said that he was surprised at the dirty campaigning and hate speak used against the DS by DSS officials.
