No decision has yet been taken in Pristina on whether to allow Serbian elections to be held in Kosovo. However, UNMIK spokesman Alexander Ivanko said that the decision would be made very soon. He also rejected rumors that UNMIK was in secret talks with Belgrade over the matter. UNMIK still to decide over elections “Our official position is that only UNMIK can organize elections in Kosovo, at least for now,“ he said. Ivanko announced a series of consultations between UNMIK, the Contact Group and the EU over what position to adopt vis-a-vis the upcoming Serbian elections and whether to allow them to be held in Kosovo. The spokesman also dismissed speculation that UNMIK was negotiating with Belgrade behind the scenes. “We have regular contact with the Serbian government through our office in Belgrade, but I have no knowledge of any kind of talks on elections,“ he insisted. UNMIK has thus far permitted elections to be held in majority Serb areas in Kosovo, stressing that it has not assisted in their organization, but takes care of security in the background. This formula will most probably be adopted once again on May 11. Slightly paradoxically, after the independence declaration, the organization of elections in Kosovo, or rather the Kosovo Serbs’ participation at the elections could be officially sanctioned provided, as is expected, a new Kosovo constitution is adopted by the middle of the month, whose final version has just been approved by EU Special Envoy Pieter Feith. Under this constitution, the Kosovo Serbs are entitled to hold dual citizenship, which automatically allows them to vote in Serbian elections. Alexander Ivanko (FoNet, archive)
