Dimitrij Rupel says Slovenia will push for Serbia to sign the SAA with the EU before the May 11 elections. “We intend to take one step further in the direction of Serbia getting closer to the EU – we will try and convince the ‘Doubting Thomases’ to offer Serbia to sign the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU before the ballot,” the Slovenian foreign minister said today. Rupel pushes for Serbia to sign SAA before elections Full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal has been set as the condition for Belgrade to sign the deal, initialed in November 2007. Rupel added Wednesday in Ljubljana that he hopes "Serbia will chose the European path on May 11". “As far as I understand, the parties and politicians who are working towards Europe have the majority, the are stronger, which is a good sign,” Rupel said of the Serbian parliamentary vote. “Serbia’s place is in Europe and the EU. Our efforts are good for Serbia and the EU,” he continued. Rupel also said that there are "serious challenges facing Kosovo" and that the EU will help with them. “The EULEX mission will be working on the entire territory of Kosovo,” while “Kosovo must be a multi-ethnic state, which is a very demanding task,” Rupel was quoted as saying. “History has piled up many problems between the main ethnic groups in the region, the wounds heal slowly, but enough time has passed since the critical moment of 1999, and we can expect constructive work,” Rupel was optimistic. He added that "intercultural dialogue between Serbs and Albanians needs to be the first step". Rupel said that the first three months of Slovenia’s EU presidency have been successful and “without any major mistakes,” adding that he is looking forward to the next three months of work ahead of Slovenia.
