Russia has today asked the international troops in Kosovo to show restraint. The statement from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs came after this morning's unrest in northern Kosovska Mitrovica, worst since the Kosovo Albanians' unilateral declaration of secession. Russia wants NATO, UN to show restraint "There must not be a return to violence and conflict," the statement said. "The international presence must show restraint and must act strictly in adherence to the UN mandate." Russia sees this morning's rioting, sparked by a KFOR and UNMIK raid on a courthouse where Serb judicial workers were protesting, as a "direct result of the unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo, and the rejection of this illegal act by the Serbs who live there". "It is obvious that the situation can only normalize by returning the Kosovo process to the framework of international law, in order to find a basis for dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina," the Russian MFA said today.
