The hospital in Gracanica, and outpatient hospitals in central Kosovo this evening received fresh medical supplies. The Serb enclaves in Kosovo suffered without basic medicines for over a week, because the authorities in Pristina had confiscated a shipment sent from central Serbia. Medical supplies arrive in Serb enclave Belgrade yesterday called on the World Health Organization to intervene. The Serbian government also discussed the matter in a session today. This evening, head of the Gracanica hospital Stojan Sekulic told Tanjug that the medicines and equipment worth RSD 7mn, had arrived accompanied by UNMIK police at about 18:00 CET. Sekulic said that medical personnel in central Kosovo would continue to assist only urgent cases and that this would remain so until the problem of medical supplies for health care institutions in this part of the province was solved. Last week, UNMIK's customs service insisted that the documents accompanying the medicines include a certificate of the Pristina authorities. Sekulic said that they could not request the certificate, because this would "involve them in the health care system of the self-styled state of Kosovo". UNMIK Customs spokesman Adriatik Stavileci said this evening that "medicines which were stored by the UNMIK Customs in northern Kosovo received the green light after previously receiving instructions from the Kosovo Health Care Ministry." Earlier in the day, Director of Gracanica Health Center Rada Trajkovic said that supplies of medicine and medical material were running out. Trajkovic warned of a humanitarian disaster unless the expected deliveries arrived within 24 hours. “The patients, chronic diabetes sufferers, patients with heart problems and those needing surgery, urgently need help, and we are reaching a position where we can’t intervene,” she said. “Such a situation is intolerable and UN’s special representative in the region Joachim Ruecker will bear all the responsibility for any possible consequences,” she told Radio Gracanica.
