Talks are under way between Serbs in the Kosovo Police Service and UNMIK to return to work, says a government spokesman. Government Coordinator for Kosovoska Kamenica Nenad Kojic says, however, that they will only do so if it is under the control of UNMIK. "KPS Serbs in talk on return with UNMIK" Kojic said that negotiations about the opening of new police substations in places where Serbs lived were under way. “The police officers are sticking to their demands and will not return under the command of the KPS and the quasi-state of Kosovo. We expect negotiations with the Kosovo police commissioner in the presence of UNMIK to bear fruit,” he said. He added that he hoped that “soon there will be more Serb police officers in KPS than before.” The security question in eastern Kosovo, namely in the municipalities of Kosovska Kamenica, Novo Brdo, Kosovska Vitina and Gnjilane where around 35,000 Serbs live, is stable, said Kojic. He added that KFOR deserved credit for that, because it had intensified patrols in all mixed areas. 137 Serbian police officers from Kosovsko Pomoravlje have left the KPS. After returning UNMIK representatives their uniforms, weapons and police equipment on March 1, they were suspended.
