The U.S. wants Serbia to turn to the future at the next elections, says a State Department spokesman. Sean McCormack added that the U.S. understood that the Kosovo problem was “a sensitive issue” for Serbs and the Serbian government, but nevertheless called on Serbia to maintain its good relations with Washington and with the European Union. State Department: Serbia has to turn to future “At a time when they (the Serbs) are struggling with political turbulence, we would like to invite them to direct their attention to the future, rather than to the past,” he said. “We understand how complicated and emotional the Kosovo problem is for the Serbian people and the Serbian government. But, it is in Serbia’s interests to have good relations with the EU, the U.S. and other governments,” said McCormack ahead of a new Security Council meeting on Kosovo. The U.S. and UK see no pressing need to call yet another meeting of the Security Council devoted to Kosovo, stressing that there is no chance of new discussions altering the balance of forces within that divided institution. Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, as stated by the Russian UN Ambassador and current Council President Vitaly Churkin, will speak during the public part of the debate. The 15 Security Council ambassadors will then continue their meeting behind closed doors. In other developments unrelated to the Security Council meeting, the chief of the future EU mission in Kosovo, French General Yves de Kermabon, is in New York to discuss with the UN the “serious difficulties” that face the European mission after the arrival of its first 20 employees in the region.
