Russia will call a UN Security Council meeting for Tuesday, on Serbia's request, dedicated to Kosovo. “The meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 11, in the afternoon,” Maria Zakharova, the Russia’s UN mission’s spokeswoman, told Itar-Tas. Russia to schedule UN SC meeting for Tuesday Russia’s UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin met with Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic yesterday. “Serbia and Russia are seriously concerned about the consequences of the unilateral declaration of Kosovo independence,” Churkin said, adding that during the meeting with Jeremic “parallel activities in international structures were discussed, most notably in the UN.” The foreign minister told Russian reporters in New York that “the Russian position regarding Kosovo is legitimately based on international law, which rules out the possibility of taking away a sovereign country’s territory.” He called on the international community not to allow the EU mission to enter Kosovo, stating that Belgrade was working in accordance with international legal norms. “It is very important to stay with the positions of international law,” Jeremic said, adding that UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and the presence of the UN mission in Kosovo was “the only legal international presence in Kosovo.” UN Security Council (FoNet archive)

The foreign minister told Russian reporters in New York that “the Russian position regarding Kosovo is legitimately based on international law, which rules out the possibility of taking away a sovereign country’s territory.”
