Olli Rehn says Brussels wants Serbia to confirm "its close ties" with the EU. “Recently, there have been statements coming from Belgrade to the effect that progress in that direction should be stopped, and that’s why the EU wants the Serbian government to confirms its dedication to closer ties with the Union,” the European enlargement commissioner told a news conference. Rehn: EU waiting for positive signal “The majority of Serbia's citizens strongly support the country's EU membership, and the government should listen to the majority,” stressed Rehn, adding that the EU was waiting for a signal from Belgrade. Asked what he thought about the resolution on European integration proposed by the Serb Radical Party, SRS, Rehn said that he had no intention of interfering in decision-making in Serbia, adding that he was aware that Serbia was "going through a difficult period due to Kosovo's historical importance". “There are, however, limits and a red line, and that is that we do not accept any kind of violence,” said Rehn, adding that the EU condemned every form of violence and expected all the leaders in the region to do likewise. Rehn also said that the EU remained ready to sign the Stabilization and Association Agreement with Serbia once Belgrade met all the conditions relating to full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal.
