Russian First Deputy Premier Dmitry Medvedev is in Belgrade today. He met with President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica to reiterate that the Russian Federation will "firmly support the stand that Serbia is a unified state with Kosovo within its borders". Medvedev: Here to prove Russia's support "Our starting point is that Serbia is a unified state whose jurisdiction extends to the entire territory and we will abide by this principled stand," Medvedev said. He pointed out that his brief visit to Serbia was aimed to "prove Russia's support at a time of illegal unilateral declaration of the Kosovo independence". Medvedev, who looks likely to win Russia's presidential ballot next weekend, said after his meeting with Kostunica that Moscow and Belgrade will "continue to coordinate a joint Kosovo policy". The meeting with Kostunica did not take place at the government headquarters, but in a villa in Belgrade. "We agreed to coordinate efforts to find ways out of this complicated situation, and that we will solve the issue of Kosovo," Medvedev said. Kostunica told reporters that Serbia will work with Russia, and other countries opposed to Kosovo's unilateral secession, in order to have it annulled at the UN Security Council. The prime minister stressed there will be "no normalization of relations with those countries that have recognized Kosovo, until they annul their decisions". Medvedev also said that the unilateral declaration, adopted by the Kosovo Albanian authorities in Pristina on Feb. 17, is violating Serbia's sovereignty and the country's basic rights, at the same time "threatening international system of security and international law". "The unilateral declaration has complicated the situation in the province and in southeastern Europe," he concluded. Previously, Tadic's cabinet issued a statement about today's talks with the Russian delegation, which says that the president thanked Russia for its principled support over Kosovo. "Economic relations between Serbia and Russia are imporoving, while bilateral ties are developing to serve both countries' interests," the statement said. Medvedev, who is also Gazprom's president of the board of directors, attended the signing of a landmark energy cooperation deal between the two countries. Read more about it here.
