The unilateral Kosovo declaration puts at risk the pillars of international order, Sergei Lavrov says. "These pillars have been built for decades, as well as international stability," the Russian foreign minister told U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a telephone conversation. Lavrov warns Rice of unilateral moves According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the conversation, initiated by f Rice, saw Lavrov confirm the principled position of Russia that the unilateral activities of Pristina are unacceptable, as is the unilateral declaration of independence of the province. Emphasis was placed on the danger of consequences of such moves, which entail the danger of destroying the pillars of the world order built over decades, as well as international stability, the Russian Ministry said in a statement. The United States on Monday recognized the independence of the Serbian province, which was unilaterally declared on Sunday by the ethnic Albanian provisional authorities. Meanwhile, Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said he believes that the declaration of Kosovo's independence is a precedent destroying the system of international law, Russia's news agency Itar-Tass reported Tuesday. Ivanov underscored in St. Petersburg that the declaration of independence by the Kosovo parliament is "opening Pandora's box" that will bring about a chain reaction, because other unrecognized territories have grounds to say "why are we worse than they are?" Ivanov, Russia's former defense minister, cited Abkhazia as an example that declared its independence from Georgia as a result of the armed conflict, Itar-Tass said.
