Russia's president will remain the country's most powerful official, Putin's likely successor Dmitry Medvedev said. Analysts have questioned whether Medvedev, a 42-year-old former law professor, will be running the country or Putin, his more popular and experienced mentor, who has said he is prepared to serve as premier in a Medvedev administration. Medvedev: Russia to keep strong presidency Medvedev said the presidency would remain the focus of power in an interview published in the Itogi news magazine on Monday. "Our country was and remains a presidential republic. It cannot be any other way. There cannot be two, or three or five centers (of power). The president is in charge of Russia, and under the constitution there can only be one president." "Russia is a federal country with great potential and not a few problems. A state like that can only be run with the help of strong presidential power, regardless of who at any given moment occupies that office in the Kremlin," said Medvedev. Putin will step down in May because he is constitutionally barred from running for a third consecutive term. Opinion polls rank Medvedev as the overwhelming favorite to win a March 2 presidential election.
