Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and other parallels feature in today's Kosovo reporting in two UK dailies. When Saddam Hussein annexed Kuwait, the Western powers insisted that sovereignty and borders determined and protected by international law and the UN must be protected, the Independent newspaper says in a commentary, carried by the BBC's service in Serbian. British press: From Kuwait to Kosovo Those same self-proclaimed guardians of international law are now turning their own arguments upside down to ensure Kosovo's separation from Serbia, the daily is quoted. The article adds that, unless something incredible happens in the next 72 hours, Great Britain, America, and most EU states will "use all their might to tear apart a small, sovereign state." The Independent further says that Kosovo is the biggest leap into the unknown in Europe, and that the partially approved ad-hoc secession of the province will have huge long-term repercussions on other countries, such as Georgia, Bosnia, and Cyprus. The Financial Times says in an article on the same subject that once the celebrations are over, the reality of the independent Kosovo will become "uncomfortable even for those who fought for it". The paper reminds that much will ride on the economy in the poor territory, where only 47 percent of men and 10 percent of women are gainfully employed. Furthermore, the FT warns, Russia could use the case of Kosovo to build an image of a country that defends international law, opposed to the western countries that have so far been positioning themselves as guardians of democracy in various parts of the world. Considering that the future of Kosovo is much less important to the world powers than Iraq or Iran, they may lose interest for this part of the Balkans soon, the paper adds. The British daily concludes that the simplest way to in fact solve the Kosovo status problem, a return to the UN, will be impossible in the near future due to a developing conflict along the East-West lines.
