The editor-in-chief and a journalist of a Zagreb daily quit after publishing a bogus interview with the Croatian PM. The resignation of Jutarnji List chief Tomislav Vrus has been turned down, though it is still unclear what will happen to Davor Butkovic, who last night claimed that he was solely at fault for the professional oversight in question, which was why he had tendered his resignation. Fake Sanader interview creating media storm On Saturday, the daily published an interview with the Croatian prime minister that, it later turned out, was a fake, as the man who had actually supplied Sanader’s supposed answers was Viktor Zahtila, who used to work at weekly Nacional. Zahtila sent the answers to the questions Butkovic believed he was directing to Sanader by e-mail from the flat of daily Vecernji List journalist Milena Zajovic who published the story. On the basis of this, Jutarnji List has accused its rival of foul play. Vecernji List has dismissed the accusation in a strongly worded statement, claiming that neither Butkovic nor Jutarnji List were in a position to blame others for their own failings. President of the Croatian Journalists’ Association Zdenko Duka said that the interview had displayed a lack of care and professionalism, both on Butkovic’s part for falling for the trick, and the editorial team’s for not checking on such an important matter as an interview with the prime minister.
