Turk: Recognition is not UN's domain

Slovenian President Danilo Turk says recognition of Kosovo independence is not the domain of the UN, but sovereign states. During a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York, Turk added that international practice and law would have to be adhered to during the process, reports the Slovenian STA agency. He said that the UN would have its work cut out over Kosovo. Once sovereign countries have expressed their positions, “the UN is back in the game,” explained Turk. The Slovenian president said that the UN would be involved in matters such as the presence of an international mission or implementing the planned changes in the province. Asked what Slovenia deemed to be an optimal time for Kosovo to declare independence, Turk skirted round the question, saying however that he saw no need for “Slovenia to be first.”
