Over the last 15 years, Red Star and Partizan have accumulated over EUR 300mn in transfer fees from player sales. B92’s Insider continues its investigation into the corruption inherent within the world of Serbian football, looking this week at the business transactions of Serbia’s big two. B92 probes Red Star, Partizan dealings Insider investigates how much of this income went to the clubs themselves and how those involved in the sale of players embezzled millions. While the country was under sanctions in the 1990s, money from transfer sales could not enter the country legally. Red Star and Partizan officials therefore created several mechanisms which served to make several individuals very wealthy. These jobs went uncontrolled for many years. Long-time Partizan President Ivan Curkovic told Insider that during sanctions, the club kept its money in foreign banks and handled transfers through the Karan Limited agency. Curkovic: We had an agency in Luxembourg. Insider: Karan? Curkovic: That was from 1989 to 1995. Insider: Karan Trade? Curkovic: Yes, yes. Insider: Whose agency is that? Curkovic: That was an agency…there were people who worked there, it was a lawyers’ office dealing with… Insider: That means they were managers? Curkovic: They were managers, they took a very small commission, but most importantly for us, they helped us sign contracts and make sure money was paid. Insider: This is not your agency? Curkovic: It is not our agency. Insider: So where do you get authority from? Curkovic: Well, someone had to be authorized to sign off. Insider: But, you have the authority to withdraw money from their account? Curkovic: No, the account was there, I did not have the authority, I had the ability to say how much was needed as club president. However, I did not have access to the Karan account, there was a lawyer who took care of that and who would sign off. Insider airs tonight at 10 p.m. on B92 TV.
