Serb Radical Party (SRS) presidential candidate Tomislav Nikolic met in Moscow today with Russian Deputy PM Dmitry Medvedev. They discussed economic and political cooperation between Serbia and Russia, said SRS General Secretary Aleksandar Vucic. Nikolic holds talks with Medvedev Speaking at a press conference, Vucic said that, during talks with the Russian official that had lasted a little over an hour, Nikolic said that Serbia could be the link between the EU and Russia, and that major firms from the EU that were manufacturing in Serbia could find their best market in Russia. According to the SRS general secretary, Nikolic pointed out to Medvedev, who is likely to succeed Vladimir Putin as Russian president, that it was necessary to promote relations between the two states. Also under discussion was how Russia could become an even bigger market for Serbian goods, and further potential cooperation in the energy sector. Nikolic received assurances from Medvedev that Russia would not change its position on Kosovo, that it would respect Serbia’s borders as recognized by the UN, stressing that no border changes in Serbia could pass through the United Nations, regardless of the pressure being exerted in other parts of the world. Earlier this morning, the SRS candidate had met with Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov . According to a statement from one of the meeting participants, Duma Deputy Speaker Alexander Babakov, who is also member of the Just Russia party at whose invitation Nikolic came to Moscow, the presidential election in Serbia and the situation regarding Kosovo had been the main topics of the meeting. "His position as potential president is that he will insist on broadening cooperation with Russia, not only economically, but in cultural and historic areas also," explained Babakov, adding that Nikolic had said that Russia was Serbia's main partner. The Just Russia deputy expressed his satisfaction that Nikolic "represents the section of the Serbian people who, while respecting the sovereignty of Serbia, do not forget the country’s warm and close relationship with Russia."
