EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana told the BBC that Brussels wants good relations with Serbia in the future. “All I can say now about the elections is two things: First, that the turnout was great, which shows that the people of Serbia are very interested in a democratic result for the elections." Solana: EU wants Serbia "Secondly, we hope that the sentiments of European integration will win out,” Solana said. Asked whether the EU will make a decision regarding the signing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) on January 28 with Serbia, Solana said that he "cannot answer that question at this time." “We will do everything we can to achieve very close cooperation with Serbia. Serbia is an important country and we want it to move closer to the EU. I think that the majority of Serbia’s citizens want that as well,” Solana said. Meanwhile, Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel said that the European Union “is trying to initiate” the signing of the SAA with Serbia and that it is possible that it will happen by the end of January. He commented the results of the first round of presidential elections in Serbia stating that “he is happy that the elections were held in peace and in the democratic spirit.” Javier Solana (FoNet archive)
