Russia will not support a unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence, Vladimir Putin says. The Russian president made the comments Friday in Sofia, where he was signing an energy sector agreement with his Bulgarian counterpart, Georgy Prvanov. Putin dubs Kosovo independence illegal, immoral Putin also said his country was urging more negotiations on the future status of the province, and finding of a compromise between parties concerned. "In our opinion the negotiations should be continued, and a comprise needs to be reached that satisfies both the [Kosovo] Albanians and Serbia," Putin told a news conference. According to the Russian president, a "unilateral declaration of independence and support [for independence] by members of the international community would be illegal and immoral." "Russia cannot support such a solution," Itar-Tass news agency reported Putin as saying. Meanwhile, his chief of diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, accompanying him in Sofia, said that Russia is "counting on Bulgaria to assume a constructive position in the resolution of the Kosovo issue." Bulgaria understands the risks of the situation and of the attempts to resolve this problem unilaterally, without Serbia's participation, Lavrov told Itar-Tas.
