Zemun Clan ringleaders sentenced to 460 years altogether

Four members of the Zemun Clan criminal group have received prison sentences totaling over 460 years.

Four members of the Zemun Clan criminal group have received prison sentences totaling over 460 years. Milorad Ulemek, Vladimir Milisavljevic, Sretko Kalinic and Milos Simovic – all of whom, except Ulemek, are still on the run - have received 40 years each. Zemun Clan ringleaders sentenced to 460 years altogether Aleksandar Simovic, Nikola Bajic and Djordje Slavkovic were sentenced to 35 years. Milan Glisovic will spend 32 years behind bars and Selman Hamidovic 10. Dusan Krsmanovic, who expressed his remorse for the crimes during the trial, was sentenced to 20 years. Former police officer Slobodan Pazin received seven and a half years. Milan Jurisic was sentenced to 34 years, Darko Milicevic 13, Dragan Miladinovic 5, Slobodan Kovacic 4, Bojan Dolic four and a half, and Darko Milic to 5 years. Toni Gavric will spend three years behind bars, as will Predrag Maletic, while Sasa Petrovic was sentenced to five years. Nenad Opacic, Aleksandar Zdravkovic were acquitted because their crimes had expired, as were Ninoslav Konstantinovic and Dejan Randjelovic who are still on the run. Ulemek and several other defendants were ordered to pay businessman Milija Babovic EUR 10.5mn in damages within the next fortnight. If they fail to do so, their assets will be seized. Ulemek was acquitted of some of the murders as well as of the abduction of Vuk Bajrusevic. However, the Zemun Clan will have to pay Bajrusevic’s sister, Bojana, EUR 1.5mn in damages. Proceedings are still under way. The Zemun Clan are accused of criminal association, 17 murders, three abductions and two terrorist attacks. Of the 30 accused, six are on the run. The verdict is being delivered by a panel of three judges, presided by Milimir Lukic. The Zemun Clan members were initially accused of the murder of the late prime minister, Zoran Djindjic, before the indictment was split, with the trial getting under way in October 2004. The trial has run for over 100 working days.

Aleksandar Simović, Nikola Bajić and Đorđe Slavković were sentenced to 35 years. Milan Glišović will spend 32 years behind bars and Selman Hamidović 10. Dušan Krsmanović, who expressed his remorse for the crimes during the trial, was sentenced to 20 years.
