After a month of campaigning, pre-election silence came into force at midnight. The media silence will last until the final polling stations are closed on January 20 at 8 p.m. Pre-election silence falls The presidential elections, called on December 12, will be held on Sunday and will be the first presidential elections under the new Constitution. There will be nine candidates participating, as confirmed by the Republic Election Commission (RIK): Tomislav Nikolic of the Serb Radical Party (SRS), Jugoslav Dobricanin of the Reformist Party, Boris Tadic of the Democratic Party (DS), Velimir Ilic of New Serbia (NS), Istvan Pastor leading the Hungarian coalition, Marijan Risticevic of the National Peasants’ Party, Cedomir Jovanovic of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Milutin Mrkonjic of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and Milanka Karic of the Serbian Strength Movement (PSS). During the silence, all direct or indirect promotion of candidates, their manifestos and political organizations is prohibited, as is placing propaganda material within 50 meters of polling stations. On Sunday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., the media will be allowed to report where candidates voted, but no statements from candidates can be published. There are a total of 6,702,018 registered voters in Serbia and 8573 polling stations. The president is directly elected by the voters to a five-year term. If a candidate obtains a majority in the first round, he or she will become president. If not, a run-off between the top two candidates will be held on February 3.
