A Montenegrin ruling party official says that the recent religious dispute "has become political." Dragan Kujovic told daily Republika that “linking faith with politics“ in Montenegro “will increase until a true equality of the Churches exists, that is, until the Montenegrin Church receives its rights guaranteed by the constitution and international acts.“ "Montenegro Church dispute turns political" The Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) official also said that the domestic courts will face a big challenge in deciding what will happen with the property of the two Churches in Montenegro. Currently, much of that property is owned by the Serbian Orthodox Church. Kujovic said that if the national courts fail to rectify the issue, it will be taken to the international courts. He said that while the state should not interfere with religious matters, it “must create conditions for granting religious freedom and equality for everyone.“ Kujovic's comments come after a decision last week by the Serbian Ministry of Religion not to register the Montenegrin Orthodox Church (CPC) in Serbia.
