A musical gala in Belgrade last night marked the beginning of events to celebrate 200 years of the University of Belgrade. The role and significance of Serbia's oldest high-level education institution was recalled in speeches given by its dean, Branko Kovacevic, and the head of the University of Arts, Cedomir Vesic. University of Belgrade marks 200 years Camerata Serbica, an orchestra made up of the University's best music students and professors, then performed in front of a Sava Cetner audience. 1808 is taken as the date when the university was founded, when Serbia's reformer and educator, Dositej Obradovic established what was known as the Grand School. 30 years later, in 1838, Kragujevac's Lycee was set up, where studies lasted for two years, to be replaced with a three-year curriculum in 1840. That school then moved to Belgrade in 1841, to merge with the Grand School, and in 1863 move into Belgrade's Kapetan Misino Zdanje. Today's Rectorate building was also left to the University by Kapetan Misa, one of the greatest Serbian philanthropists of his time. The structure itself is considered to be one of the capital's most beautiful buildings. The University of Belgrade was legally granted autonomy with a law in 1905. This autonomy was revoked by another law, adopted by the Milosevic regime in 1998, by Radical and Socialist ministers in the then cabinet. It was restored after the fall of the regime in October 2000. The University suspended its activite only once, between 1941-1945, during the Nazi German occupation in the Second World War.
