The U.S. and Germany have agreed to recognize Kosovo's independence, the New York Times writes. According to the daily, the two countries will call on all other European states to follow their lead. Washington, Berlin to recognize Kosovo, U.S. paper says Quoting unnamed European sources, the New York daily states that this decision was confirmed recently via phone by American President George W. Bush and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The two stressed that such a move was in the best interests of “stability in the western Balkans.” “America has already promised Kosovo independence. If Washington recognizes Kosovo, and the European countries do not follow suit, it would be a catastrophe,” the daily’s unnamed source stated, stressing that the U.S. was aggressively pressuring the EU to recognize Kosovo without so much as a week’s delay, upon declaration. At the same time, the New York Times states that Italy, Germany, Great Britain and France will recognize Kosovo’s independence, regardless of the “dissident” EU member-states such as Spain, Romania, Slovakia and Cyprus.
