A Macedonian policeman was killed Thursday in Skopje when assailants opened fire from an unmarked car. The news was confirmed by Interior Ministry spokesman Ivo Kotevski, who said that the motive of the attack was unknown, and that the victim had not yet been identified. Two other officers suffered injuries. Macedonian police find vehicle and weapons from attack A few hours after the attack, in the Skopje suburb of Arcinovo, police found the Opel Vectra from which the gunmen had launched their attack, and in which they had left the firearm used in the ambush. The suburb where the car was found is the biggest Albanian village in Macedonia and was one of the heartlands of the former ethnic Albanian National Liberation Army in 2001. The investigation at the scene is still ongoing. The attack came just after Deputy Interior Minister Refet Elmazi tendered his resignation. Elmazi, an ethnic Albanian and a member of Menduh Thaci’s Democratic Party who form part of the ruling coalition, cited personal reasons for his resignation, while the opposition called for his dismissal after he took part in a scandalous brawl inside the Macedonian parliament last September. Kotevski said more details concerning the attack would be announced after completion of the first part of the investigation. A few hours after the attack, in the Skopje suburb of Arčinovo, police found the Opel Vectra from which the gunmen had launched their attack, and in which they had left the firearm used in the ambush.

The suburb where the car was found is the biggest Albanian village in Macedonia and was one of the heartlands of the former ethnic Albanian National Liberation Army in 2001.
