EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn says that 2008 will be a “crucial” year for Serbia’s European future. Rehn said he is convinced that full cooperation will be completed with the Hague Tribunal without delay, so that Serbia can continue on its European path. Rehn: Serbia at crossroads “The year 2008 will be crucial for the European future of Serbia. The signing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) is within arm’s reach,” Rehn told daily Danas. “This agreement is a key crossroad on Serbia’s European path,” the commissioner said, adding that Serbia initialed the SAA in November because it had fulfilled all technical conditions and had progressed in fulfilling the political ones. As far as Kosovo is concerned, Rehn said that “it is clear that the status quo cannot be maintained.” “Work needs to be completed in one coordinated process, which the European Union will lead. We are aware of our responsibility to secure an administrative process and we will do so,” he said. “Serbia is at a crossroads – it is close to completing its reconciliation with the past, and at the same time taking its place on the path towards European integration,” Rehn said, adding that the European Commission is working to make Serbia’s European perspective "real". Rehn also said that the European community will not be complete until Serbia and the rest of the region joins the EU. Olli Rehn (FoNet, archive)
