Lawmakers accepted to adopt local elections legislation in an urgent procedure as they held a parliament session yesterday. Electoral legislation envisages that local elections be held according to the proportional system, and for mayors and municipal chiefs to be appointed from among the deputies of city or municipal assemblies, Beta reported. Local elections likely on May 11 The regular session of the parliament is to end on December 29, and the Constitutional Law envisages that local elections be scheduled by December 31, within a deadline of 60 days from the day of coming into effect of this set of laws. Speaker Oliver Dulic stated Thursday that local and provincial elections in Serbia will be held most probably on May 11. "At this time I still cannot speak about the exact date. It is probable that the elections will be held on May 11, but I would like to see how the debate [about the laws needed for the scheduling of local and provincial elections] will end," Dulic told reporters in the parliament building. He said he hoped parliament will be able to pass these laws by midnight on December 29, and that it will be possible for the elections to be scheduled.
