B92 and UNICEF joined forces to give presents to children without parents, and those with disabilities. The campaign was launched to encourage citizens and companies to buy New Year’s presents for children in institutional care. B92, UNICEF to help orphans, children with disabilities UNICEF Director in Serbia Judita Reichenberg said that the proceeds from buying the presents would also be used for other child programs. “We hope you’ll all buy presents for those children, to make them happy and to let them know we haven’t forgotten them,” said Reichenberg. B92 Director Veran Matic stressed that such a campaign was particularly important at this moment in time, following the publication of reports on the pitiful conditions in Serbia’s social welfare institutions. “My call and the call you’ll be hearing in the next few days from B92, on TV, and on the radio, is for as many companies as possible to get involved by buying presents and, among other things, coordination led by the Ministry to ensure every child receives a present,” said Matic. The first company to join the campaign was the Victoria Group, who bought 60 presents for children who had passed through the safe house for victims of domestic violence. “We wanted kids, who have for various reasons had to pass through the safe house, to have at least one bright moment in their dark lives, in these dark days, and to show them that there are people out there who wish them happiness and joy in the future,” said Natalija Kurjak on behalf of the Victoria Group. The campaign was also endorsed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy. “I call on others, not just for New Year, but afterwards, to help children in such a way. And, for not only New Year, but for many days throughout the year to be devoted to our children,” said Labor Minister Rasim Ljajic. Ljajic announced that the ministry would be providing 9822 presents. This time, stressed the minister, nor would Roma children be forgotten, with 650 tickets having been provided by a number of companies for the performance of Peter Pan at the Belgrade Arena.
