None of the eight injured are in a life-threatening condition. “I think everything will be OK, they’re not in any danger. They’re suffering from smoke inhalation, some very small cuts on their arms, but everything else is lung related. You can get a real impression of the situation from a patient who was saved from the fifth floor and who is in the most serious condition,“ says Director of the Vojvodina Lung Disease Institute Aleksandar Milovancev. The fire at the hotel, located right in the center of Novi Sad, broke out at about 11 p.m. last night. 18 fire engines were sent to the scene. The Novi Sad Fire Brigade received assistance from their colleagues in Becej, Srbobran, Backa Palanka and other towns in Vojvodina. People who were in the city center at the time and attempted to assist in the rescue operation say that, even though they had not seen the fire, they had not been able to stay inside the building for long because of the intensity of the smoke. “We tried to enter through the glass. Because there was double glazing in places, we smashed it, opened it, went into the rooms, broke down the entry doors separating the second and third floors,“ said one fireman, Gorislav Vidakovic. “The smoke was overpowering. We tried to get to the people upstairs, but we couldn’t breathe, there was no oxygen,“ he recalled. The Putnik Hotel ablaze (Srdjan Abdijevic)
