Police stopped a group of some 40 ultra-nationalists from breaking up a rally organized by NGO activists. About 100 activists from the No Turning Back organization gathered in Republic Square last night to protest against the clericalization of the state. The extremists tried to break up the rally but were held back by a large contingent of police officers separating the two groups. Extremists threaten NGO activists The Coalition for a Secular State organized a performance to mark International Human Rights Day. Some of the ultranationalists were wearing badges with the face of Hague fugitive Ratko Mladic and, during the NGO performance, shouted slogans promoting violence against homosexuals and other nationalities. “Today is really sad because it is December 10, International Human Rights Day, and this really shows how endangered the protectors of human rights are in this country. This is some type of state of emergency and the product of a low intensity war against the critical population, above all, activists in civil society,” Women in Black activist Stasa Zajevic said. After the rally, police escorted the activists away from the square in order to avert any incidents. The NGO stated that it had organized the performance in order to show that “government officials and the Serbian Orthodox Church are clericalizing the state, which is a severe blow to the idea of human rights.” The group believes that the government, led by Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, is trying to give the Orthodox Church “a monopoly on the spirituality and morality of the people.” They carried signs with slogans such as “We want democracy, not theocracy” and “Women against Fundamentalism.” Last night in Republic Square (Tanjug)
