The UNMIK chief could opt to renew mandates of existing local authorities in northern Kosovo, B92 has learned. After last week's negligible turnout by Kosovo Serbs in the local and assembly elections in the province, especially in the municipalities of Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposavic, Joachim Ruecker is considering annulling the results, and issuing a decree to extend the existing municipal authorities' mandates. Ruecker could renew local mandates in north This would prevent Albanians taking over as local chiefs in Serb-inhabited towns. As for Strpce and Novo Brdo, sources with UNMIK say a so-called combined solution is being prepared, where existing and newly elected political representatives would cooperate. Strpce municipal president, Stanko Jakovljevic, has told B92 that consultations and talks were ongoing. "It's impossible to have less than 20 percent of those who voted produce ethnic Albanian authorities is a town where more than 10,000 Serbs live. We have talked to Ruecker and I expect that no one will try to evict us from the town hall," Jakovljevic said, and added only 12 Serbs turned out to vote last weekend. Ruecker is set to declare official results of the November 17 elections in Pristina on December 4.
