EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris Friday. If no compromise is made in negotiations on Kosovo's status by December 10, the decision on the continuation of the process will be made by the UN secretary-general, Solana said after the meeting. UN head to decide on Kosovo talks if no deal He added that he "still hoped" for a breakthrough in the negotiations before the expiry of the December 10 deadline, and reminded that another round of Troika-led negotiations will be held in Vienna next week. Solana said that there would "hopefully" be progress, and added that otherwise, the UN secretary-general would have to receive the Troika's report on December 10, the AFP news agency reported. "We will see from that moment on. The UN secretary-general will have to make a decision and say how the process will continue," Solana said. The EU official said that he and Sarkozy had agreed that "all efforts should be made to reach unity within the European Union" on the issue of Kosovo, and give a chance to the ongoing negotiations. German Minister of State Gernot Erler said, also Friday, that "the worst option would be to give up a negotiated solution for Kosovo's status", because this would "pave the way for the danger from spontaneous and politically uncontrolled activities." "In any case, advantage should be given to solving this issue through negotiations. The German government is making intensive efforts to ensure a negotiated solution to the Kosovo issue and we will continue with our efforts until December 10," Erler told the Interfax news agency in an interview published in the Friday issue of the Vremya Novostey daily. The German diplomat added, however, that the "solution for the issue of Kosovo's status has been postponed repeatedly and that Kosovo residents are running out of patience." "We do not encourage anybody to make unilateral decisions, but we know about Pristina's warning that it might take unilateral activities after December 10," Erler said. During his visit to Moscow, Erler on Thursday met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister in charge of relations with European countries Vladimir Titov. A statement released after this meeting said only that as far as international issues were concerned, the talks focused on the resolution of the Kosovo crisis.
