Two workers died in an accident this morning when a tunnel collapsed in the Belgrade suburb of Resnik. Interior Ministry Chief of the Protection and Rescue Department Predrag Maric said that the rescue mission had finished at about 11:30 a.m., and that two workers had died, though no-one else had been hurt. The first worker was waist-deep in the dirt, and firemen were able to pull him out after 40 minutes, but he died, probably as a result of internal injuries,” Maric said. “The other worker was completely buried, so the rescue operation didn’t end until about 11:30 a.m. Besides the two deceased, there were no other injuries,” Maric said. Belgrade Deputy Mayor Radmila Hrustanovic and chief city architect Djordje Bobic visited the scene of the accident. Bobic confirmed that the accident had been caused by damp soil falling, adding that the project was being carried out by the Energoprojekt company with state funding. “The authorities need to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether it could have been prevented,” Bobic said. An investigation is under way.
