Bozidar Djelic says that the European Commission (EC) will support Serbia’s request for structural funds. After yesterday’s meeting with Commissioner for Regional Development Danuta Hübner in Brussels, the deputy prime minister said that Serbia could count on EUR 200-300mn from the EU’s structural funds. However, as Serbia is not a candidate for EU membership, it does not yet have access to the money. Djelic confident of further EU funds Djelic said that he and Hübner had agreed that the EC administration would help Belgrade’s efforts to set up an institutional system allowing Serbia immediate access to the funds for regional development upon receiving candidate status. Djelic also met with European Commissioner for Economy and Monetary Affairs Joaquim Almunia, and spoke about the signing of a new agreement for reform programs with the International Monetary Fund, together with help from the EU. By the end of the year, Belgrade will send a technical group to Brussels in order to determine with EC officials underdeveloped areas where Serbia could potentially receive funding. Djelic also met with European Commissioner for Science and Research Janez Potocnik, and EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson, to discuss Serbia’s efforts in entering the World Trade Organization.
