Infrastructure Minister Velimir Ilic announced this weekend he would be running for president. The leader of New Serbia (NS), a party aligned with Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica's Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), said he would be a candidate in the Serbian presidential elections. Ilic announces presidential bid The vote to chose the next president is yet to be called. Ilic, considered by many a controversial figure, said the DSS-NS coalition's stand was that the vote "should not be held before the Kosovo issue was solved." "If a decision on Kosovo is postponed, the elections would have to be postponed as well," he told reporters in Srezojevci near Gornji Milanovac. Previous coalition agreements that helped forge the cabinet in May specified that serving president, Boris Tadic, would receive support from the coalition in his bid to win the second term in office. But so far only G17 Plus has officially said it will back Tadic come the elections.
