Serbia is one of the least safe countries in Europe for motorists, according to statistics. The death rate in traffic accidents is five times higher than the European average, with an average of 60,000 traffic accidents altogether, and 1,000 deaths a year. High death rate on Serbian roads In addition, there are 15-18,000 injuries caused by traffic accidents, and over a billion euros worth of damage. Poor road conditions, lack of signalization, old vehicles, speeding and drink driving are some of the main reasons for accidents on Serbian roads. In 2001, a record 1275 people died in traffic accidents in Serbia. In the first seven months of this year there have been 550 deaths. Among the most severely injured in accidents are motorcyclists. Motorcyclist Boris Stojcevski said that he was once hit by a car that went through a stop sign. “I crashed into him and he left the scene of the accident. Friends who were passing by ran over to me, half my body was lying in a puddle and I was unconscious. I suffered head injuries,” he said. Of the injuries sustained, 75 percent are to the head, often leading to comas. Spinal injuries make up 30 to 50 percent of cases. Victims of traffic-related deaths and serious injuries are most commonly young people aged between 15 and 45. One-third of deaths in Serbia are the result of traffic accidents, and every year about 50 children are killed on the roads.
