Serbian Army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Zdravko Ponos and KFOR Commander Gen. Xavier Bout de Marnhac met Monday. They agreed that the security situation along the administrative line between Serbia proper and Kosovo is "under control", and expressed confidence that the form of cooperation so far, which is based on mutual confidence, would continue. The generals stressed the importance of regular cooperation between the two forces at all levels, in particular in exchange of information parallel patrols along the administrative line, aimed at prevention of incidents and control of illegal crossings. Also Monday, the MoD said a draft law on the Serbian Army, sent to parliament by the government, calls for adapting military ranks to international standards, thus abolishing some of the existing and introducing new ones. In the future, military personnel will no longer be commissioned as captain first class and general. On the other hand, the rank of brigadier general will be introduced – held by officers at a level in between colonel and major general. Thus, the Serbian Army will in the future have four ranks of general, replacing the existing three: brigadier general, major general, lieutenant general and general. As the draft law also abolishes the navy as a separate service, the existing naval ranks will also be abolished and will be translated into the corresponding new ones by the year 2011.
