U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Cameron Munter visited Pranjani Friday. Munter was there to honor Serbian families who saved the lives of hundreds of U.S. airmen shot down by Nazi forces during World War II. U.S. ambassador honors rescuers of U.S. airmen The ambassador placed a wreath at a memorial built on the site of an improvised airfield, from which allied aircraft in 1944 airlifted about 500 U.S. pilots whose planes were shot down throughout Serbia. General Draza Mihailovic's Royal Yugoslav Army in the Homeland troops and local Serb villagers rescued and sheltered the U.S. personnel from German forces and then organized their evacuation. Munter conferred with local residents on the alliance of Serbian and American peoples during WWII and visited a local church and health center.
