The Czech KFOR battalion claims that it was under surveillance last year, according to the Czech Information Service. In the Czech Information Service's annual report, it was stated that its soldiers in Kosovo had been the targets of foreign spies who were trying to obtain classified information by following the battalion and eavesdropping on it. Czech KFOR unit claims it was tapped Independent experts, however, believe that the spies were more likely local Kosovo citizens, who were trying to conceal their illegal activities from KFOR. “We received a warning that our phones and army radios were being tapped. We received instructions to watch what we say,” said Czech soldiers serving in Kosovo in 2006. Even though the report states that Czech personnel are most frequently monitored by foreign services in the Balkans, the Middle East, Afghanistan and the countries of the former USSR, expert Andor Sandor, former head of military intelligence, believes that Kosovo citizens, not foreign spies, are to blame. “They know fine well what part of any unit is heading when and where, and what they are doing. There can be no other explanation for the fact that nothing has ever been found in raids in a country were everyone has their own weapons,” Sandor said.
