Jelko Kacin says that the EP thinks Serbia could become an engine for the whole region in European integration. The European Parliament (EP) rapporteur for Serbia told daily Novosti that this could happen very soon, provided the country woke up and displayed its full potential. "Serbia can spearhead Balkans into EU" “The positive tone of the EP’s resolution is a result of a consensus reached within the institution, that’s to say by people who follow events in the Balkans closely, and who have the greatest influence on the EP’s position on the region,” said Kalcin. Asked whether there was a possibility of the EU being more pragmatic and lenient as far as full cooperation with the Hague was concerned, Kacin replied that “there will be no pragmatism where war criminals are concerned” as by abandoning that principle the EU would be destroying the foundations on which it was built as a “project for reconciliation.” Kacin stressed that “there won’t be any signing” of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) until Ratko Mladic had been extradited to the Hague. The EP’s resolution reserved its harshest criticism for corruption within Serbia and the country’s justice system, and Kacin said it would take a long time for the Serbian legal system to meet the required European standards, and that the judiciary needed “new people with European experience.” “Serbia must improve the efficiency of its justice system, its legal regulations, and their implementation,” the EU rapporteur warned. Asked whether during the debate, there had been any consensus among MPs on the need to remove the visa regime between Serbia and the EU, he replied that Serbian citizens “had to recognize the EU’s readiness to help Serbia in that message.” The EP rapporteur (Beta)
