Reis-ul-ulem of the Bosnia-Hercegovina Islamic community Mustava Ceric has sent an open letter to President Boris Tadic. In the letter, Ceric reminds Tadic that at their meeting on March 26 this year they agreed that the Serbian Islamic community was independent and that it had a historical and moral right to be in a union with its Bosnian counterparts, in the same way that the Serbian Orthodox Church in Bosnia-Hercegovina (B-H) was in union with its counterpart in Belgrade. Bosnian reis enters Sandzak debate “That means that the Serbian authorities shouldn’t interfere in internal matters pertaining to the Serbian Islamic community,” wrote Ceric. “Sadly, the last two incidents show that the Serbian authorities have been interfering in those internal matters by giving administrative and media backing to the creation of a Serbian Reis, for which there are no historical or actual grounds,” the letter goes on to say. In his opinion, it is the same as if B-H elected a Serbian patriarch and questioned the right of Serbs to communicate with Belgrade. In his letter, the Bosnian Reis states that Serbian Muslims are dutiful and responsible, and can independently choose what sort of an Islamic community they want, and who they want to align themselves with. “Confident in your good faith, and not doubting your dedication to the mutual trust between Bosniaks and Serbs that you showed by your visit to Potocari cemetery, I hope you will do everything in your power for the Serbian Islamic community to be a true reflection of Muslim will,” concludes the letter, a copy of which has been delivered to the office of the Serbian Islamic community’s head mufti, Muamer Zukorlic. Two days ago, Zukorlic called the Muslims in the region to "defend the mosques" from those imams who were on the other side of the divide.
