Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Alekseyev says December 10 does not mark the end of talks on Kosovo's future status. "Earmarking December 10 as the end of negotiations is very dangerous for their future. It is quite certain that this will not be the end of negotiations," Alekseyev told Tanjug on Saturday, and added that Russia opposed any imposition of artificial deadlines. “Kosovo negotiations won’t end on Dec. 10” He told the agency that a large number of problems in and outside Europe, such as the situation in the Middle East and in Cyprus had been going on for years and that it was not clear "why it is only Kosovo that has to be solved immediately, in the space of a few weeks." Asked how Russia viewed the fact that countries which had bombed Serbia in 1999 and had then immediately come to Kosovo as multinational forces could recognize Kosovo in the event of a unilateral declaration of independence, Alekseyev replied: "Have you heard some of the statements, primarily coming from (former international mediator) Ahtisaari who said that all the decisions had been taken in 1999? This is very dangerous. This makes it sound as if NATO's military intervention was launched with Kosovo independence in mind." He voiced Russia's satisfaction with the fact that the negotiations were heading in the right direction. "I am informed that some common ground has been found between the stands of the two sides. I am not certain that this is a good time to discuss this in detail. Negotiations are not open to the public and this is very good." "But, I can confirm that some progress has been made. I am more optimistic today than I was a few months ago," Alekseyev said. Aleksandr Alekseyev (FoNet)
