The Novi Sad police have prohibited the organization of a neo-Nazi rally scheduled for October 7 in that town. According to a police statement released today, the decision to ban the march had been made in accordance with the Law on Public Gatherings. Police ban neo-Nazi rally The president of the neo-Nazi organization Nacionalni Stroj, Goran Davidovic, submitted a request to be allowed to stage the rally under the slogan "Serbian March, March for Serbian Unity," which was met with fierce opposition from numerous political parties, non-governmental organizations and associations. They appealed to the authorities to prohibit the rally as it could lead to violence, and upset stable and tolerant ethnic relations existing in Novi Sad and throughout Vojvodina. Media reported that the neo-Nazi march was set to coincide with the birthday of one of German SS leaders, Heinrich Himmler. Nonetheless, Davidovic refuted these allegations, defending the rally as being intended as "a protest against all forms of separatism, sects and divisions." Earlier this year, Davidovic was sentenced to one year in prison after being found guilty of stirring ethnic, racial and religious hatred, when he, along with a group of others, stormed an anti-fascist forum held at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad on November 9, 2005, assaulting those present. Earlier today, the Democratic Party (DS) asked the police to prohibit the rally saying that the march would turn into "a promotion of undemocratic, intolerant ideas and hate speech." “Despite the official explanation of the rally’s motives, fear of the meeting is justified, bearing in mind the actions of this organization and the fact that its members have been convicted of promoting national, religious and racial hatred,” the Democratic Party (DS) stated.
