Nenad Canak said today that someone needs to be held responsible for statements made against his party. Commenting on accusations made by Infrastructure Minister Velimir Ilic that Canak’s League of Vojvodina Social Democrats was "a separatist party," Canak said that if this was true, someone from his party would already have been arrested. Canak refutes separatist accusations “The fact no-one has been arrested means that either the police are incompetent and that Minister Dragan Jocic needs to hand in his resignation, or Ilic is lying, and he should go." "Either way you look at it, someone from the government need to be put in prison,” Canak said. He also accused Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica of "immorality", stating that calls for Vojvodina autonomy are a problem now, but that it was no problem when seven years ago he was elected as Yugoslav President. “Unlike his party, we do not change our manifesto. Kostunica did not object when our party and others nominated him for president back then,” he said. Canak said that he doubted the sincerity of Ilic’s announcement that he would run for president, stating “I do not believe that Ilic is ready to risk giving up his post as minister, as otherwise the only thing he can be a candidate for is a long prison sentence,” Canak said.
