Even though some states sentence pedophiles to a life term in prison, maximum penalty in Serbia totals 18 years in jail. Despite the fact that newspapers often report on pedophilia cases, it seems that not enough attention is being paid to the issue. Measures to suppress pedophilia The statistics as to the number of reported pedophile cases and those tried in courts in Serbia are also missing. Child psychiatrist Oliver Vidojevic says that the majority of child abuse cases is not reported and remains hidden. “When it comes to sexual abuse, there is a research showing that five years pass on average before the abuse is revealed,” he said. Various types of preventive measures are being employed in the world to fight pedophilia, including introduction of heavy penalties for the offenders. “U.S. citizen Thomas Reedy was sentenced to 1,335 years in prison for advertising child pornography on the Internet in what is said to be the first time a U.S. court has sent a pedophile to serve life.” However, the Serbian judiciary can hand out sentences ranging from three to fifteen years in jail for statutory rape. In case of grievous bodily harm and death, the maximum sentence is eighteen years in prison. Ana Milosevic, a judge with the First Municipal Court in Belgrade, says there is a slight increase in the number of tried cases in the field of child abuse. In her opinion, the law provides for relatively light sentences for such acts. Some experts say that none of the preemptive measures have been undertaken to suppress pedophilia in Serbia. “The penal system needs to be changed and involve correctional measures as well,” Vidojevic said. “Sex offenders should be sent to behavioral therapy that might yield certain results,” he explained, adding that they should be listed in records available not to the general public, but to employers.
