The world first-ranked Justine Henin had an easy time with Andreja Klepac, breezing past the Slovenian qualifier, 6-3, 6-1 on the hardcourts at Rexall Center on the campus of York University.

Janković, a four-time titlist this year, also made quick work on Tuesday, beating Canadian wild card Marie-Eve Pelletier 6-0, 6-1. The Serbian has reached the semifinals or better in 11 of 18 events this year.

The fourth-seeded Ivanović succumbed 6-3, 6-1 to a player who is ranked 169th in the world. All nine of Yan's singles appearances this year have started in qualifying.

Ivanović defeated Swiss Martina Hingis in last year's Rogers Cup finale in Montreal. This event shifts between Montreal and Toronto each year. The new world fourth-ranked Ivanović is fresh off her big title in Los Angeles last week, but she faltered against the lesser-known Yan.

Sixth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova, fresh off her runner-up finish to Ivanović in Carson, got past Canadian wild card Stephanie Dubois 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-1. Petrova will be opposed by quality Swiss lefthander Patty Schnyder on Thursday.
