NGO calls for measures against RTS editor

According to YUKOM, the RTS denied the right of Vladimir Popović, close aide of late Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić, to publicly respond to allegations Mihajlović made against him in the program, holding the RTS news editor in chief responsible for not allowing his note to be read.

YUKOM dispatched a note to the RTS Managing Board as well, asking for Nenad Stevanović’s removal from the post “since his conduct constituted for a violation of Articles 78 and 79 of the Broadcasting Law.”

The request was signed by YUKOM President Biljana Kovačević Vučo.

Stevanović said in his defense that the state television took no part in any “public lynching of Vladimir Popović”, stressing that it refused to publish his statement since it “contained slurs.”

“Even though you have cited provisions of the Broadcasting Law allegedly breached on the part of RTS, our legal department warned me that we were not obligated to publish in impressions, conclusions, and judgments,” he said.

According to Stevanović, Popović’s letter did not contain corrections as to what was said in the June 29 program, but was instead “full of insulting remarks”.

“It is not forbidden for Popović to write this kind of letters, but it is for us to publish them,” Stevanović said.
