Croatia wants explanation for Slovenian eavesdropping

Rop claimed that Janša and Sanader “arranged incidents on the border between Slovenia and Croatia in the Piranski Bay in 2004,” for the purpose bringing to power then Slovenian opposition leader.

Janša’s cabinet has denied the claims, saying that Rop’s statements are false, damaging and insulting.

Sanader said that he has heard a lot of nonsense in his years in politics, but that this is one of the worst, adding that Rop has obviously not gotten over his defeat in the elections.

“It is obvious that he does not want to admit that he eavesdropped on the leader of the opposition and that is why it is probably easier for them to say that they were eavesdropping on a foreign official, but not even that is allowed in European democratic practices. That is why we will get to the bottom of this case,” Sanader told Croatian TV Nova.

The Croatian government has requested a clear and immediate explanation for the incident, and a letter of protest from the Croatian Internal Affairs Ministry has already arrived in Ljubljana. Croatia called the SOVA action “harmful to relations between the two countries and a violation of international standards.”

Rop said that SOVA was not ordered by anyone to eavesdrop on any domestic or foreign officials.

This is one in a slew of recent scandals hitting SOVA. Recently, bills showed that SOVA used an  illegal “black fund” to pay for a plane ticket for a healer from India to come see then-president Janez Drnovšek.
